Invincible Summer

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.”
— Albert Camus

These featured works from Invincible Summer were created for a group art exhibition featuring artists Lisa Kurt, Kelly Ogilvie and myself. Using the Albert Camus passage above and the season of Spring as the backdrop, I wanted these paintings to speak to the boldness and confidence of a female spirit transitioning into a stronger sense of self. Bright saturated colors, flowers in bloom and unashamed nude female figures went hand-in-hand in my mind for the show. When thinking about the compositions for these paintings, I thought about women in my own life that emerged like wildflowers after a period of “winter.” They may have withered for a time, but they returned to be much more open and beautiful – facing towards the sun.
